The NRL are set to hold crisis talks with Andrew Fifita following revelations he wants to quit the game after being snubbed for Australian selection.
Fifita has reportedly approached his management about the prospect of leaving the NRL and the final two years of his Cronulla contract.
The NRL are believed to want to offer Fifita clarity on the matter in the hope of keeping him in the code.
The 27-year-old is under investigation for his links to one-punch killer Kieran Loveridge after the prop wrote “FKL” on his armband during matches this year which was believed to have stood for “For Kieran Loveridge”.
The emotional toll he has copped showed on Thursday night when he broke down in tears at the Sharks presentation dinner while addressing the audience after claiming the Sharks’ player of the year honours (shared with teammate Matt Prior).
NRL boss Todd Greenberg has stated the prop will be eligible for Australian selection in the future.
"We've got to uphold the values, the ethics and what we stand by," Australian halfback Cooper Cronk said.
"And we've got a responsibility to get kids and other people to follow our game and one day maybe pull on the Australian jersey.
"You do a personal indiscretion, you shouldn't be a part of it, it's as simple as that. Depending on the magnitude of it."
Fifita scored the winning try in Sunday night's grand final win, Cronulla's first in their history.
He was arguably the best player on the ground and is regarded as the best prop in the game.
