The Canberra Raiders will ditch their cheerleaders for the 2017 season.
Game day will instead host local school dancers as part of a dance competition during the 2017 season.
Russell Crowe famously replaced South Sydney’s cheerleaders with drummers in a bid to make some fans feel more comfortable at home games.
However, Raiders commercial boss Jason Mathie said the club’s decision was not made in a similar vein.
"This is not about the cheerleaders. It's about a point of difference," Mathie told Fairfax Media.
"The critical thing for us was trying to expose our match day to a greater number of people, and the dance competition (gives) 20-50 people each week the opportunity to perform on-field."
