Ennis famously infuriated Smith and his teammates by tapping the Maroons skipper on the head during a semi-final two years ago after the Storm captain made an uncharacteristic error at a crucial moment.

Skipper of the Bulldogs at the time, Ennis became embroiled in controversy following the incident with some saying he should have had more respect for the Australian captain.

Canterbury won the match 28-4 and went on to play in the grand final.

Speaking at a media call on Thursday afternoon, Smith said he would not be drawn into the niggles that have become an integral part of Ennis’ game.

“That’s a long time ago,” Smith said.

“I get on with him quite well and it is part of the role he plays. He’s a competitor and is doing the best for his team to try and win and we are doing the same.

“I try and keep myself calm and he might try and do it on Sunday again. I am not sure.

“We will pass each other at some stage during the match...we are in the same part of the field and play in the same position.”

But in typical Smith style, the hooker praised Ennis for his longevity and on-field prowess ahead of Sunday’s decider.

“For a guy to be around as long as he has and represent NSW and be such a quality player… he is one of the best in the modern game,” Smith said.

“He’s a tough little bugger and gets knocked down by the big blokes but keeps getting up. He’s a huge reason why the Sharks are in the grand final because of what Michael has done in his performances.”
