Gillett was heavily pursued by Manly who were believed to have offered the 28-year-old a superior deal worth up to $200,000 more a season, but Brisbane managed to keep their man who is settled in the Queensland capital with his young family.

The deal will see him remain a Bronco until the end of the 2020 season when he will be 32, most likely making him a one-club player.

The Sunshine Coast junior is a Maroons mainstay and debuted for the Kangaroos in 2014.

“Matt is a wonderful rugby league player but also a thoroughly decent person,” Brisbane chief Paul White said.

“His efforts for the club on and off the field do not go unnoticed.

“We are really excited Matt has chosen to commit to the Broncos for such a long time.”
