Broncos star James Roberts has been fined $20,000 over a drunken incident but has escaped a ban.
The 23-year-old was restrained by security at popular Brisbane watering hole the Normanby Hotel while on a night out earlier this month.
He was choked out during the scuffle and lost consciousness after being refused service and abusing a female staff member.
He left the premises after regaining consciousness and reportedly kept drinking at another night spot.
Brisbane refused to stand him down following the incident.
“We informed the NRL of this matter before it became public and have continued to provide them any and all assistance in their investigation,” Broncos’ chief executive Paul White said.
“This will be a total plan for James’ development and wellbeing, and will have high regard for both the issues of the past and what we are hoping for going into the future.
“Going back to provide benefit to the community is an appropriate way to acknowledge a breach of community standards.
“This is not just a punishment, but about forward development for James and a way for him to gain some grounding and provide assistance to the Broncos’ well-documented community activities.”
Roberts has a history of off-field dramas, having been sacked from Penrith and South Sydney previously.
