UNIVERSITY SPORTS: A SNAPSHOT
From its inception in 1993, the Australian University Games has grown into Australia's largest annual multi-sport event. Held each Spring, the Games are renowned for providing a friendly but competitive environment for Australian university athletes. They are the flagship event on the national university sporting calendar.
The Games are a perfect opportunity for university athletes, many of whom are of Olympic standard, to compete against each other in a national multi-sport event. As such, the Games has built up a reputation as a not-to-be-missed event, attracting over 8000 participants each year.
Off the sporting field, an action-packed, week-long social program is conducted to complement the sporting activities and enhance the event experience for all participants.
The Games’ sporting schedule is made up of more than 30 individual and team sports. In 2015, the Australian University Games head to the iconic tourist and sporting location of the Gold Coast (September 27-October 2). Major event partners Tourism and Events Queensland, City of Gold Coast and Bond University are ready to welcome students from 42 universities.
On the most recent figures, there are 978,578 students enrolled at participating universities in Australia. Of these, 96,000 are enrolled in university club sports. A further 200,000 students participate in non-organised sporting activities on campus, placing universities as a vital cog in the Australian sporting landscape.
