The 34-year-old will be rested until the match in a bid to get him back to full fitness.

He is unlikely to take part in the captain’s run on Tuesday.

The Maroons are sweating on his recovery for Game III with stars Greg Inglis, Darius Boyd, Johnathan Thurston and Matt Scott all unavailable through injury.

A veteran of 28 Origins, Slater’s experience will be vital to Queensland’s attempt at claiming their 11th series victory since 2006.

"I’m a little bit concerned but I think he’s going to be ok," Walters said on Sky Sports Big Sports Breakfast on Monday.

"It was the last drill we were doing and he just went over it.

"You could feel the silence across the whole group but I think it was more a scare than anything.

"It was the same ankle he injured against the Sharks about a month ago and he just tore maybe a bit more scar tissue off there but he’s been icing it all night.

"We hope to get him running tomorrow and see how he goes from there."

Should Slater fail to recover, Cronulla fullback Valentine Holmes would likely slot in at the back.

Walters said there was no contingency plan at present if Slater was to be ruled out.

"We don’t really, we’ll see how he is today but if he is in some sort of doubt we’ll have to bring someone in," he said.

"But we’ve got a thousand fullbacks here playing everywhere so that’s not going to be a problem for us too much.

"But I reckon Bill will be ok to be honest with you and I’m hoping that’s the case later today."
