The Gold Coast slumped to a 54-0 defeat to Brisbane at the weekend leading many to suggest Henry’s time on the Glitter Strip could be up.

But the Maroons coach said his current focus was on steering the state side into next year and beyond.

Walters is signed for next year and is in discussions to extend his deal to 2020 on the back of Queensland’s legendary series victory.

And while the five-time premiership-winner is hopeful of an NRL coaching career at some stage, he said he was not interested in holding the clipboard at the embattled club.

“I would like to coach in the NRL one day – I don’t think that time is now, I really believe that,” Walters said on Fox League.

“I think there is more that I have to do with the Queensland side with the transition of some of our players.

“And I really enjoy the Origin…we won it this year so I am still on a pretty big high from all of that. Club coaching is a different gig again and the week to week grind of it all can be very consuming.”

The Titans were expected to build on last year’s semi-final appearance after finishing eighth, albeit an artificial semi’s appearance after Parramatta were wiped from calculations following their salary cap controversy.

Had the Eels not been busted the Titans would have finished ninth.

However, the Gold Coast have battled injury in key positions throughout the year and have shown real grit at times.

Walters said he sympathized with Henry after a difficult season.

“There is no position there. For mine, I hope the Coast stand by Neil and stick behind him,” Walters said.

“The last two years he’s had there have been injury riddled.“

Walters said the players must be accountable for their end of season capitulation.

“Those senior players need to stand up and say ‘well this is what we’re about here’,” he said.

“I don’t know who their leadership group is but with Queensland team…you’ve got to take ownership of your team.

“You can’t leave it all up to the poor old bloody coach standing there with an empty bucket of water.”

The Titans are out of finals contention and face the Dragons away on Saturday.
