David Reynolds and Erebus Motorsport will take inspiration from 1986 Bathurst-winning privateer Graeme ‘the Chickenman’ Bailey and his Chickadee Commodore in this weekend’s Sandown 500 Supercars ‘retro round’.
The Erebus Penrite Commodore which Reynolds will share with Luke Youlden will wear a livery that pays tribute to the car in which Bailey and lead driver Allan Grice scored an unexpected privateer win in the 1986 Bathurst 1000.
The Grice/Bailey ’86 Bathurst victory was not dissimilar to that of Reynolds and Youlden last year, both being two smaller, non-factory teams which were considered long-odds winners going into the race weekend.
“It’s very cool not only for what it achieved, but it reminds me of our win in a lot of ways,” Reynolds said.
“It was a win against-the-odds; a little team who started second on the grid and defeated the favourites, exactly like we did.”
Continuing the theme, the sister Erebus Commodore of Anton de Pasquale and Will Brown will wear the colours of an earlier Bailey car, the Chickadee Toyota Celica in which Bailey won his class at Sandown in 1982.
“Retro round has always been cool but to be part of it now is special,” said de Pasquale.
“The car looks really cool – it’s great to pay tribute to that generation of cars and drivers and particularly Graeme and what he achieved."
