It was a day of uncharacteristically heavy tyre wear and an equally unexpectedly high rate of mechanical attrition that saw both Mercedes as well as Daniel Ricciardo's Red Bull bow out with technical failures. But Ricciardo's team-mate, Max Verstappen, was untroubled on either of those fronts, the Dutchman surging to a victory that had seemed highly unlikely 24 hours earlier after a disappointing qualifying performance from the Red Bull team.
