The fullback is banned for the first 12 rounds after testing positive to cocaine amidst the club’s maiden premiership celebrations.

He was subsequently released by the club but was hopeful of returning mid-season and signing a new deal.

Barba will be forced to train on his own in a major setback to his return.

 “If the Sharks had suspended him or taken the 12 match ban he could have continued to train with the club,” an NRL spokesman told Rugby League Week.

“However they terminated him so he cannot train with the club.”

Barba spent extended time at a health facility in Thailand to address substance abuse issues.
