Applauding the products of heavy industry as they launch themselves at mother nature also contains visceral appeal. After all, it’s in the Australian handbook of settlement. Yet for those who subconsciously conceive of their vehicles – and by extension the Falcons and Commodores on the track – as rampaging phallic symbols, it’s something else. For them, the whole experience is just another excuse for personal aggression – even if it’s an act as infantile as chucking chicken bones at anyone who even looks like they’re gainfully employed."
