Benji Marshall has landed in Brisbane and is set to sign with the one club town for a pittance.
Wayne Bennett has pulled off a masterstroke in jagging the 2005 premiership-winner for a reported $100,000 on a one-year deal after he was shown the door by the Dragons.
At the height of his powers, Marshall averaged about $30,000 a game.
The Dragons offered him a $300,000 one-year extension earlier this year which he found offensive and declined.
How quickly things can change.
The former New Zealand star comes with a wealth of experience and will be sitting quietly in the background watching incumbent halves Ben Hunt and Anthony Milford.
The 31-year-old’s presence will put pressure on Hunt and Milford to perform with Bennett sure to drop either back to reserve grade should a form drop ensue.
Marshall is likely to spend the majority of his time in the Queensland Cup but will likely be utilised during the taxing Origin period.
He can also play centre and fullback, but at a measly $100,000, the club would likely not care if he ran around in reserve grade for 2017.
Signing a one-year deal will also keep Marshall hungry for an upgrade with the half previously stating a desire to play another two or three seasons.
