Burgess has not represented England since 2013 before embarking a fruitless stint in English rugby union.

Bennett said Burgess’ return would be a massive boost to England’s chances of securing a tournament win on home soil.

“To have Sam Burgess back is not just a boost for England but one for the international game. Having worked with him in the past, he’s a great bloke to have around and have by your shoulder on the field,” he said.

Bennett said his troops were more than capable of upsetting heavyweights Australia and new Zealand on the back of a squad brimming with potential.

“There’s some serious talent in this English side and that’s testament to the England program, the clubs they play for and the player’s attitude in wanting to do their best each week.

“I’ve spoken to the boys and they’re well aware what’s ahead of them in this tournament.”

Bennett’s first match as English coach arrive sin a fortnight when his side takes on France before November’s Four Nations Tournament.
