Australian cricket great Ian Chappell has copped a barrage of criticism for comments directed at South African bowler Kagiso Rabada.
Chappell was glowing in his appraisal of the 21-year-old who annihilated Australia’s middle order in a five-wicket haul which helped the Proteas claim the opening Test at the WACA.
But it was his comments regarding Rabada’s origins as a player that has the 73-year-old in the firing line.
The comments arose after fellow commentator Ian Healy asked Chappell how Rabada could have developed such speed in his bowling.
“You’d have to ask all the batsman in his village,” Chappell replied.
Unfortunately for Chappell, Rabada grew up in Johannesburg and attended the prestigious St Stithians Boys College.
His father is a neurosurgeon.
Social media was scathing of Chappell.
Rabada comes from a small village called Johannesburg. #AUSvSA #IanChappell

Chuffed Kagiso Rabada and I come from the same village... It's a pretty big one, called Johannesburg. #SAvsAUS

Chappell has done it now. Go ask the 'people in his village' he says about when Rabada knew he could bowl fast.
