Ben Barba has agreed to a new one-year contract with the Sharks for the 2017 season.
Barba was released by the Cronulla at the end of 2016 after the fullback tested positive to cocaine during the aftermath of the club’s maiden premiership win.
“Barba, who featured in all 27 Sharks matches in 2016, scoring 15 tries and delivering a team-high 18 try assists, has worked diligently on making his return to the NRL a reality and is continuing his well-being program,” the club said in a statement.
“Our club met with Barba and his management to discuss the new contract proposal for consideration by the NRL.
“The contract will be submitted to the NRL for approval and registration.
“Should his contract be ratified and accepted our Club will work with the NRL Integrity unit to determine a time frame for Barba’s integration back into the Sharks NRL program and in relation to his return to training.”
Despite early reports suggesting the 27-year-old may be permitted to train with the club during his ban, it is believed Barba will not be allowed to return in any capacity with the premiers until Round 13.
The club was believed to have beeen hopeful the upcoming Auckland Nines matches could count towards soaking up his ban, although the NRL is expected to maintain Barba must miss 12 regular season games.
