Laurie Daley has hit back at Blues legend Brad Fittler’s claims NSW lacks killer instinct after failing to sink the knife and allowing Queensland to send the Origin Series to a decider in Brisbane.
Fittler joined a chorus of former players including Andrew Johns in slamming the southerners for not closing out the series in Sydney after leading 16-6 with 30 minutes to go.
Instead NSW played “negative” football in attempting to protect their lead instead of sticking to the style of play that had the Maroons on the ropes for the first three halves of football throughout the series.
A raft of poor errors let Queensland back in leading calls from Fittler for his beloved Blues to find the killer instinct if they are to claim just their second series in 12 years.
"We've certainly got it (killer instinct)," Daley said on Fox Sports' NRL360.
"Whether we displayed it the other night, that's Freddie's opinion and he's entitled to it. We certainly showed a killer attitude in game one, and we did it in the first 40 minutes in game two.
"We probably got negative and tried to hang on, rather that just going flat chat at it. And I'll talk to some of those guys when we go back into camp.”
Code-hopper Jarryd Hayne was particularly poor in Game Two as were several of his teammates who seemed consumed by the Queenslander’s comeback curse.
However, Daley said he would likely keep the same squad which annihilated the Maroons 28-4 in Game One in Brisbane.
"I'm comfortable with the squad that we've got. I'm very comfortable," Daley said.
"That's not to say that if we felt that to win, and we can improve our side, we wouldn't tinker with it.
"I can't imagine massive changes, but I'm very confident in that 17 guys going up to do the job."
