As the NRL readies itself for a May 28 resumption date, the Brisbane Broncos have copped a major blow following Fifita's surgery.

The 20-year old Queensland Origin star had his damaged lateral meniscus repaired, effectively ruling the forward out indefinitely.

The Broncos, 2-0 and already looking improved on last season's below-par performances, will be boosted by the early return of Matthew Lodge from his anterior cruciate ligament injury.

But losing one of the game's brightest talents has left the club disappointed although they remain optimistic about his return.

“The surgery was successful and David is recovering at home and has commenced rehabilitation,” a Broncos statement said.

“We are all looking forward to David returning to full training and playing when this process has been completed.”

Meniscus tear recovery periods are generally expected to be anywhere between four weeks to four months.

Whilst Broncos coach Anthony Seibold will be hoping Fifita returns to the field sooner rather than later as the club chase their seventh premiership.
