Bird, who currently plays at centre or fullback, wants to play in the halves which was the catalyst for him signing with Brisbane.

However, Ryan Girdler believes what the Broncos say and do could be totally different.

He said Bird, who has not spent significant time in the halves at NRL level, could well play in the centres under Wayne Bennett.

“He’s leaving Cronulla to be closer to the football,” Girdler said on Triple M’s Dead Set Legends. “There’s whispers some of Brisbane’s outside backs are unhappy and maybe not staying on and then Jack Bird could potentially end up playing in the same position he is now at a club he’s trying to get out of.

“Coaches and CEOs can tell you whatever they like to get you to sign on the dotted line and when you sign on the dotted line you become theirs. When you get up there, even though they said you were going to play five-eighth but they need you to play in the centres, guess where you’ll be playing — you’ll be playing out wide.

“So what if he (Bird) gets up there and Wayne Bennett, after the first five or six weeks sees they’ve got no game management, who does he move? Milford or Bird?

“They’ve just paid Jack Bird around a million dollars (a season) and no one’s even really sure what position Jack plays.”
