Jarryd Hayne is the main target of a proposed New York-based rugby league club attempting to launch in 2019.
The New York City Rugby League consortium has lodged a bid to play in the Rugby Football League's (RFL) professional tier in England in the Championship, one level below the Super League.
The bid follows that of the Toronto Wolfpack which will play in the Championship next season as they attempt promotion to the Super League with the help of former NRL stars Fuifui Moimoi, Dave Taylor and Ashton Sims.
The New York club has significant financial backing and sees Hayne as the ideal marquee signing with the 29-year-old already known in the US after a stint in the NFL with San Francisco which made him one of the most talked about sports stars in America.
Hayne has one year remaining on his current Titans deal making for perfect timing with the lure of living and playing in the Big Apple an added bonus on top of the lucrative sponsorship dollars on offer combined with a marquee player allowance exempt from the salary cap.
The fullback, who turns 30 early next year, is unlikely to command anywhere his current wage of $1.2 million a season in the NRL making a move to the US a real possibility.
Bid co-founder Ricky Wilby confirmed the NSW rep was in the club’s sights.
"Jarryd Hayne would a perfect signing for a team in New York given his background in the NFL, given his love of American sports, given the profile he has in Australia," Wilby told AAP.
"He would be a perfect fit. I've not spoken to Jarryd, but I would love to. It would great to meet with his agent and discuss a way forward.
"We want to bring rugby league to a massive sports market."
Leading player manager David Riolo said other leading players reaching the end of their careers would likely be targeted by the New York club.
“I think they will (target a big name),” Riolo told the Daily Telegraph. “Maybe not a big-name player in his prime but there are still a lot of really big names doing really good things in their early 30s.
“Some of my clients like Ryan Hoffman, Cam Smith, Paul Gallen, the Morris twins, Trent Hodkinson — they would all look at it to go.
“If the club can tap into the American TV dollars, and with the right backing behind them, you only need a small niche market to be successful.”
