Defending Supercars champion Shane van Gisbergen ended Ford’s early season winning spree with a hard-fought victory at Winton.
Van Gisbergen headed a Red Bull Holden Racing Team one-two, with team-mate Jamie Whincup claiming second after having earlier looked set for victory.
Whincup seemed in control in the lead until the appearance of the Safety Car with 17 laps to go, when wildcard Nissan entrant Shae Davies collided with fellow Nissan driver Michael Caruso.
That brought Whincup back to the rest of the field, and after racing resumed he slid wide at the final corner, allowing van Gisbergen and DJR Team Penske Falcon driver Fabian Coulthard through.
Afterwards a dejected Whincup, who had also finished second in the Saturday Winton SuperSprint event, was left to rue what would have been his first win of the season.
"I’ve given everything I could give it today to win the race,” he said, “all I want to do is win a race and just can’t get there.
"Personally pretty disappointed but all in all happy to walk away having won the round."
Van Gisbergen said he wouldn't have caught Whincup without the intervention of the Safety Car.
"I was struggling to get close to him in the middle stint," van Gisbergen said.
"He slipped on some oil at the last corner and I got through with a bit of help from my Kiwi brother [Coulthard] beside me but then I stitched him up at the next corner. It was good battling.”
It was van Gisbergen’s fourth win of the year and prevented what could have been a fourth consecutive win for DJR Team Penske driver Scott McLaughlin, who had triumphed in the Saturday Winton SuperSprint event.
Third place on Saturday for Coulthard was enough for him to retain his championship points lead, but only by a mere two points over Whincup. McLaughlin and Whincup trail them by small margins.
Next round of the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship is at Darwin’s Hidden Valley circuit on June 17-18.
