Hussey is believed to have the edge over the Spin King for the caretaker role of the three-game series against Sri Lanka.

The part-time role opened up due to Darren Lehmann and bowling coach David Saker travelling to India to prepare for the Test series starting on February 23.

Hussey is favourite to mentor Australia for the February 15-22 home Twenty20 series.

“I don’t know if it’s going to happen,’’ Hussey said.

“I am keen and have spoken to Cricket Australia about it, but I believe they have got three or four names they are considering.

“So I will just have to wait and see. I would certainly look forward to doing something like that.

“I don’t want to be a full-time coach at this stage. I don’t want to get back on the road full-time.

“But it is a great opportunity to do three one-off games against Sri Lanka. It would be pretty exciting.”

Hussey said passing on his vast array of knowledge to the next generation was an obvious move.

“I think every player who finishes his career feels, not obligated, but that want and will to give back to help other players,’’ he said.

“Particularly the younger ones who you can help learn the lessons that took you 10 years to learn, if they can learn them a bit quicker than I did, it is something I am really passionate about.”
