Cummins has not played a Test since debuting as an 18-year-old in 2011.

Since then he has missed 59 Tests and 96 ODIs as he battled back issues.

But with the paceman showing his potential with an eight-wicket haul in the three-game ODI series against the Black Caps, Cummins is again being touted as a potential Test star.

Hussey said the quick had much potential, but it was important to take things slowly to make sure he does not endure more extended periods on the sidelines.

“As exciting as Pat Cummins is, I wouldn’t be rushing it,” Hussey told Fox Sports News.

“He’s coming off a long, long break through injury (and) he’s had a number of injuries, let’s just go the patient, softly, softly route.

“I believe Cricket Australia have a very solid plan for Pat, let’s just stick to the plan and we’ll see the rewards and we’ll reap the rewards in the long term.

“There’s no point rushing, putting him straight back in there and then putting pressure on him to perform and also to have his body right. Let’s just stick to the plan and be patient with him.”
