Former national ironman champion Dean Mercer has died after a car crash on the Gold Coast.
The incident happened at about 7am this morning.
Mercer won the Australian open ironman titles in 1989 and 1995.
He died at Gold Coast University Hospital after being rushed there by ambulance.
It is believed the 47-year-old suffered a medical condition at the wheel.
He went into cardiac arrest in the emergency room.
He is survived by his wife Reen and his four school-aged sons.
