New Zealand coach David Kidwell has spoken following Jason Taumalolo’s shock withdrawal from the Kiwis’ world cup squad.
The Cowboys lock sensationally turned his back on his birth nation to play for Tonga whom he qualifies for through ancestry.
Kidwell said he was blindsided by Taumalolo’s defection and said he had expected to play him in his regular No.13 jersey.
Various media reports a rift developed between player and coach after Kidwell demoted players Jesse Bromwich and Kevin Proctor after a drugs controversy following the Anzac Test.
Kidwell denied that allegation.
“We’ve made a number of calls, emails and texts – you’ll have to have a conversation with Jason there,” he said.
“Everyone’s going to have their own opinion. We’re trying to build new Kiwis spirit here and we’re not going to condone that kind of behaviour.”
Bromwich’s brother Kenny has been brought in as Taumalolo’s replacement.
Manu Ma’u, David Fusitu’a and Tuimoala Lolohea also chose to represent Tonga.
