Benji Marshall has all but ruled out a Super League stint as his NRL career comes to a premature end.
The premiership-winning five-eighth has been dropped from the Dragons side to face the Eels next Monday as coach Paul McGregor looks to the future by installing 21-year-old Drew Hutchison as Marshall’s replacement.
McGregor has assured the former Tiger he will get a Dragons farewell in Round 26 against the Knights.
And with no interest from other NRL clubs, the match looms as the former superstar’s last in the Australian top flight, a predicament that unsettles Marshall.
“I don’t have a plan, I’d love to stay in the NRL,” Marshall told Fox Sports.
“There’s not a lot happening at the moment to be honest and there’s a fair chance I might have to retire.
“It’s a position I haven’t been in before.
“It’s something that makes me a little bit nervous about the routine of not being a footballer if I have to retire.”
The former New Zealand captain said a swansong in England was not on his radar.
“Where I’m at with my family, England’s probably out of the question, so I don’t know,” he said.
“I’ve still got a couple of weeks to get that sorted.
“I think I’ve still got a lot to give to the game.”
