Controversial player Willie Mason’s career looks to be over after he was released from the Catalans Dragons.
The 36-year-old signed a one-year-deal with the Super League club in February but has left the Dragons after suffering a torn ligament and an avulsion fracture to his ankle.
Both parties agreed to cancel his one-year contract.
The former NSW and Australian forward had a colourful career in the NRL after debuting for the bulldogs in 2000 before claiming the 2004 premiership.
He went on to play for the Sydney Roosters, North Queensland, Newcastle and Manly, and was regarded as one of the game’s biggest characters due to a string of several off and on-field incidents.
Dragons chief executive Christophe Jouffret said the club was sad to see Mason go.
"It is bad news to see Willie ruled out for the rest of the season with a bad injury," he said.
"Willie had a fantastic career in the different clubs he played for and on the international stage with New South Wales, Tonga and Australia.
"He will remain among the great players who have worn the Catalans Dragons jersey. We would like to wish him all the best for the future."
