DJR Team Penske continued its winning ways with a clean sweep of victories for Scott McLaughlin in Barbagallo Raceway's round of the Supercars Championship.
Ford may no longer be actively involved in Supercars racing, but Ford teams are on top right, claiming five of the last race wins in the 2017 championship in a row
DJR Team Penske and Prodrive Racing Australia had shared the spoils at Phillip Island, but at Barbagallo Raceway for round four of the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship, DJR Team Penske was in a class of its own.
DJR Team Penske Falcon drivers Fabian Coulthard and McLaughlin claimed pole positions for the two races, and while luck was not with Coulthard, McLaughlin was flawless over the weekend, winning both races easily.
“My aim was to get some points off the guys in the top four places and we managed to do that,” McLaughlin said.
“I was pretty disappointed after Phillip Island that we didn’t get at least one race win there. I felt like we had a strong car there.
“I think we came in 100 points off and now we are 30 so for me it’s nice and good little gain there.”
Making it an extra special day for Ford fans was the second place Sunday race finish for PRA Falcon driver Chaz Mostert.
“We are starting to find a base for our car,” Mostert said. “We still have to do some work with it yet and a lot of other stuff inside the team we need to work on as well.”
Jamie Whincup was best overall of the Holden drivers and left Western Australia with a big haul of points after consecutive third place finishes. But on the day the Red Bull Holden Racing Team driver had no answer to the pace of the DJR Team Penske Falcons.
“We will keep chipping away as we always do, go down to Winton which is a different kettle of fish down there.”
Last year’s Perth winner, Mark Winterbottom, was fourth in his PRA Falcon, ahead of the Commodores of Will Davison and defending Supercars champion Shane van Gisbergen.
The next round of the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship is at Winton in northern Victoria on May 20-21.
