Scott McLaughlin scored a dominant victory at Hidden Valley a day after having been forced to play second fiddle to Shell V-Power Racing team-mate Fabian Coulthard.
Coulthard had led a triumphant one-two result for the team in the Saturday race, the two Falcon drivers heading home the Commodores of Nick Percat and Jamie Whincup after an eventful 42-lap encounter.
It had been a minor error from McLaughlin that allowed Coulthard into the lead, but on Sunday there were no mistake from the young Kiwi.
He was able to undercut Red Bull Holden Racing Team Commodore driver Jamie Whincup in the pits to move to the lead at the midway point of the 70-lap race. There he remained, going on to win by two seconds to deny Whincup what would have been the six-time champion his first win of the year.
“I’m pretty pumped with the win but the burnout procedure wasn’t too good,” joked McLaughlin, after blowing a front tyre as he celebrated with his brake bias wound to the front.
“I’m stoked even to be able to do a burnout. The guys have given me and Fabian amazing cars. We had really good pace and were able to do the job on strategy.”
Third was defending champion Shane van Gisbergen, trailing the winner by nearly half a minute. For the Red Bull Holden Racing Team driver, it was at least a decent haul of points after having failed to finish the previous day.
Remarkably, the victories for Coulthard and McLaughlin meant that 11 of the 12 races held so far have been won by New Zealanders.
In the championship battle, McLaughlin has moved ahead of Whincup to trail leader Coulthard by just 10 points.
Next round of the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship is at Townsville on July 7-9.
