Strikers batsman Brad Hodge had a massive swing at ball before losing grip of the bat which subsequently smashed Nevill in the face and knocked him to the ground.

“My goodness, I didn’t see that, I was watching the ball. That’s unbelievable,” Mark Waugh said in Channel 10 commentary. “I’ve never seen that happen.”

“That’s nasty,” Australian coach Darren Lehmann added.

He was rushed off the field to hospital with Rengades skipper Aaron Finch deputising with the gloves.

“I tried to hit it as far as I possibly could and the bat just came out,” Hodge told reporters after the game.

“I have never seen anything like it at all. I have seen things where bats have gone flying but never hit anyone.

Hodge put on new gloves just before the incident.

“If you have brand new gloves they have got like this powdery feel to it and it (the bat) just slipped straight out of my hands,” Hodge said.

Nevill’s departure did not hinder the Renegades as they claimed a valuable six run victory.
