Both the Boomers and the Opals booked their tickets for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games after both defeating New Zealand's men's and women's sides in the 2015 FIBA Oceania Championship. With Australian basketball at highest it's ever been, it was the strong NBA contingent who helped steer the Boomers to victory over the Tall Blacks in an intense and emotional two match series. After losing guard Dante Exum to seems to be a season-ending knee injury, it was Patty Mills who returned home to link up with his teammates to win their ticket to the Rio Games. With the assistance of the duo who just made their appearance in the 2015 NBA Finals, Andrew Bogut and Matthew Dellavedova the Boomers will now be looking to win their first ever medal at the Olympics.

The Opals arguably the most successful out of the two sides will be hoping to finally win gold after five straight podium finishes, including three straight final defeats to the US women's national team. One major barrier the Opals must overcome will be their fierce rivals, the US, as the world number one ranked side have broken Opals' hearts for the past five straight Olympic games.
