NRL chief Todd Greenberg says the NRL Integrity Unit will play a significant role in troubled star Kieran Foran’s reported return to the game in 2017.
Foran is reportedly in discussions with the Warriors regarding a one-year deal.
The 26-year-old was last month granted a release from his $4.8 million four-year deal with Parramatta on compassionate grounds.
Greenberg said any new deal would be carefully examined by the NRL’s integrity unit before a contract was registered, but such discussions were likely further down the track.
“People are getting slightly ahead of themselves”, Greenberg told Fox Sports.
“I mean the most important thing for Kieran is his health and welfare and that’s all our concern is at the moment.
“His footballing future will take care of itself on a very different path and there’ll be issues for the Integrity Unit to deal with as and when that’s required but my focus at the moment is making sure Kieran becomes a good person and gets himself well.”
Foran’s close relationship with former brothel owner Eddie Hayson has come under the microscope in recent months following allegations of match fixing.
Greenberg said the NRL would touch on such things in due course should a contract be submitted.
“There will certainly be some questions that the Integrity Unit will need to pose to Kieran but that’s much further down the track, I’m much more focused on making sure Kieran gets himself well,” he said.
