Maxwell was named the country’s best one-day player in January, but a drop in form has forced selectors to wield the axe.

Chief selector Rod Marsh said Maxwell’s omission was justified.

“He hasn’t made enough runs. (It’s) as simple as that,” he said

“How many low scores can you make? When do you draw the line?

“He has had a lot of chances. It got to that stage, we couldn’t go on any longer.”

Maxwell was outstanding last year, garnering 644 for an average of 46.00 and a strike rate of 135.86.

He was strong in Australia’s triumphant World Cup campaign, scoring 324 runs for an average of 64.80 with a strike rate of 182.02.

But Maxwell has been down on form in 2016.

He has scored just 228 for an average of 25.33 and a strike rate of 121.27.
