Transporting a banana.

Collecting his bags at the carousel, suspicious customs officials approached Smith.  

“Which is when the sniffer dog launched,’’ Smith told the Daily Telegraph.

“I’m standing there with this dog jumping all over me, all over me bag, while a Customs official says ‘so is there anything you want to tell us?’

“But I’ve got no idea what’s going on. I’m saying ‘nah, nah, not at all. It’s all sweet.”

He was detained and fined $400 for the offence.

“I had a banana in my bag,” the 23-year-old said.

“Forgot all about it.

“So they’ve taken me off to this office and already in there is Corey Waddell from Penrith. He got fined for the very same thing.

“It’s funny, straight after a few of the boys were saying to me ‘don’t worry, that’s a good omen for us’. I guess it was too ... both Corey and I played in the final.”

This week the forward, with only two NRL games to his name, is mixing it with the likes of Greg Inglis, Johnathan Thurston and Ryan James ahead of the NRL All Stars.

And after pocketing $8000 for helping the Roosters claim the Auckland Nines, Smith said he knew where he would put some of the money.

“First thing I’m using that for is my customs fine,’’ Smith laughs.

“That banana almost sent me broke.”
