Sharks CEO Lyall Gorman says Ben Barba may return to the game after completing rehabilitation.
Barba was granted a release from the club to work on personal issues after testing positive to cocaine four days after the club’s maiden premiership win.
The 27-year-old is in Thailand undergoing treatment in the company of Cronulla’s welfare officer.
“Hopefully in time we can help Ben get back in the game he loves, but that is not his priority at the moment,” Gorman said.
“I think he has made a poor choice on a poor day, whether he’s got carried away with the celebrations…I don’t know the exact circumstances of when this occurred, but it's obviously a poor choice.
Barba also tested positive to an illicit substance in January 2015 with his second breach bringing a mandatory 12-week suspension.
All players were warned they would be tested following the grand final making Barba’s decision to take cocaine all the more irresponsible.
Gorman said the NRL had confirmed to the club that no other player had returned a positive test.
“If I did know I couldn’t tell you but we are not aware of any other players who have tested positive since then,’ he said.
“We’ve been advised by the NRL that no other player has tested positive.”
