Jason Taumalolo has revealed why he has decided to turn his back on New Zealand and represent Tonga at this year’s World Cup.
The Kiwis’ preparations were thrown into disarray on Wednesday when the world’s best forward informed them he was withdrawing.
The Cowboys star said helping Tonga become a better rugby league nation was the catalyst for his decision.
"I really enjoyed my time within the Tongan World Cup Squad last time and have had a long time association with Tongan Coach Kristian Woolf," Taumalolo said in a statement published by the New Zealand Herald.
"I just feel it's time to give back and hopefully I can assist and inspire young Tongan players to chase their NRL goals.
"I see with the new international rule change an opportunity to represent both Tonga and NZ throughout my career, I have and will always be proud to wear the Kiwis Jersey.
“I just feel the World Cup provides developing nations like Tonga and opportunity to play on the big stage and I would like to help them with their campaign."
Kieran Foran is also unavailable for New Zealand due to injury.
Tonga are also likely to include Michael Jennings, Will Hopoate, Tui Lolohea, Sio Siua Taukeiaho, Addin Fonua-Blake, Daniel Tupou, Sika Manu and Konrad Hurrell giving them enough strike to trouble the powerhouse nations.
