Walters is in negotiations with the QRL and is set to sign a two-year extension on his current deal which ends next year.

Bennett had been touted as a potential suitor to take over as Queensland coach after Walters’ side’s Game One spanking in Brisbane.

But after a remarkable fightback in Game Two which sent the series to a decider won by Queensland 22-6, QRL hierarchy are keen for Walters to help forge a Mal Meninga-like Origin dynasty which saw the Maroons legend lead the northerners to nine series triumphs in his 10 years in charge.

“I plan to continue on, certainly,” Walters said.

“I’d like to stay involved as a head coach for a longer term, actually.

“I am contracted for next year but I am looking to extend that deal and I am in talks with the QRL at the moment around doing an extension.

“We’re talking about the term right now but I’d be happy to do a couple more years.

“We’ll see what the QRL are happy with but I’ve got no plans to walk away any time soon.”
