These firm, all-over compression socks are designed specifically with cyclists in mind
Along with your saddle and handlebars, your feet are a critical contact point with your bike. It stands to reason that it’s as important to look after them on your ride as it is choosing the right equipment to sit on and hold onto with your hands. With that in mind, and amid a sea of options, Swiftwick deliver socks that are as comfy as they loaded with technical features.
The US company’s Aspire range isn’t new, but is now offered in a range of colourful striped patterns. Those with experience of the Aspire will be relieved that Swiftwick have stuck with their formula.
Swiftwick socks stand out for their firm, all-over compression, designed specifically for cycling. The fixed position of a cyclists’ foot when riding means we benefit from thinner socks that encourage better blood flow. Supple but supportive, the Aspire feel comfortable from the moment you slip them on.

Part of the magic behind Swiftwick lays in the weave of a synthetic fibre called Olefin. Contributing to the strength and comfort of the socks, it also helps to protect from sunlight and staining that a rider will encounter. That said, if you have a bad track record keeping clothing clean, maybe stick to colours or stripes and not the white socks.
Looking closer at the key areas of the socks, the Aspire features a low-seam toe box, which will keep rubbing to a minimum. Heels are neatly contoured and aid the excellent, bunch-free fit.
In spite of their utility, socks have become a prominent role as an on-bike fashion statement. No matter whether you favour a short or longer sock, Swiftwick will have your ankles covered with lengths to suit every taste. Interestingly, Swiftwick themselves have taken note of which lengths favour which sports, tailoring their website accordingly; anything below quarter length or above 7 inches is referred to as a cross-sport sock.
Our test pair are the Aspire Seven (with a 7” cuff height), and are designated as a cycling-specific model. They get a thumbs up in terms of length. Wrapped in orange, blue and white hoops there are also a range of other colourways to choose from, including a hi-viz yellow. There are also Merino wool models for the cooler months.
If you haven’t tried Swiftwick socks, it’s a worthwhile investment grabbing a pair next time you visit your local bike shop. People who ride them quickly become advocates for their comfort, and chances are you’ll soon be joining them.
