ARU chief executive Bill Pulver confirmed he had met with Hayne to discuss the possibility of playing Super Rugby, most likely with the Waratahs.

The 28-year-old is ineligible to play for the Wallabies after representing Fiji in rugby sevens.

"The ARU has had dialogue with Jarryd and discussed the potential opportunities available to him in rugby,” Pulver said.

The one-time NFL star was tipped to make a late season return to the NRL with his former club, Parramatta, but that move is now in doubt.

As it stands the Eels do not have enough room in their salary cap to accommodate Hayne but the club could free up $1.2 million a season with the release of troubled signing Kieran Foran who has reportedly requested a release.

Hayne left the NRL at the end of the 2014 season in search of his NFL dream which he achieved by making eight appearances for the San Francisco 49ers during the 2015 season.

He then left the NFL to link with the Fiji sevens team in a bid to make the Olympics but did not make the final cut.
