I agree with Steve Waugh that Cameron Bancroft might be a good selection for the opening position this summer, especially in the medium to long-term.
With a weapon like Warner at one end, one of the identifiable problems Australia’s batting has is that all-important stability at the top of the order.
While Warner is one of those rare total batsmen who can adopt to most forms of the game without too much technical adjustment, Bancroft has all the attributes of a good long-form batsman, and he certainly adds an important ingredient in the field with his sharpness in the close-in positions.
The best opening combinations have often consisted of a blaster and a grafter. However, no-one should be disappointed if Usman Khawaja gets a guernsey.
He had a golden season last summer, and he’s a thinking batsman who is able to make the adjustments necessary to succeed in the Sub-Continent despite a lapse in Sri Lanka in August. He deserves selectorial patience.
The opening question needs to be settled.
We have a great variety of challenges coming up. Who do you think are the best short, medium and long-term options at the top of the order?
