David Lappartient has promised to push for a new combined all-disciplines cycling World Championships every four years after being elected president of the UCI.

Frenchman Lappartient beat incumbent Brian Cookson 37-8 in the official vote in Norway after campaigning for a major shake-up in the sport.

The 44-year-old has proposed for road, track, mountain bike and BMX events to take place in one super World Championship every four years.

The plan could start in 2023 and would then take place 12 months before each Olympic Games.

Lappartient also wants to eliminate the team time trial from the Road World Championships – which is currently run on a World Tour team basis – and make the global event purely for national teams only.

The new UCI president has vowed to boost women’s cycling and increase female World Tour events, as well as promote BMX as a way of getting more youngsters into cycling.

After winning the vote, Lappartient said: “I am extremely grateful for the support the UCI National Federations have shown for me today. Thank you all, from the bottom of my heart, for the great responsibility you are now giving me.

“I am delighted that the votes in my favour have come from all corners of the globe. I would like to congratulate Brian Cookson for his work over the past four years. I know how passionate he is about our sport and I acknowledge his disappointment.

“Lastly, I want to thank all of those who have helped me over the past few months. I cannot wait to start working for the good of cycling.”
