NRL Round 11 Preview
Cronulla Sharks vs North Queensland Cowboys- Thursday, 7:50pm
The Sharks enter Round 11 following a controversial win over the Dragons while the Cowboys would be confident after 16-point upset of the Bulldogs. It's the last chance for many players to impress for Origin with Valentine Holmes, Jack Bird, James Maloney, Justin O’Neil, Michael Morgan and Ethan Lowe all vying for selection.
Johnathan Thurston has been named and could be the difference while the Sharks lose influential front-rower Matt Prior.
Why the Sharks will win:
The Sharks will be determined to turn that around their oridinary 1-3 home win record with the Origin bye looming.
Our Tip: Sharks by 6.
New Zealand Warriors vs St George Illawarra Dragons- Friday, 6:00pm
The Warriors last week led the Panthers 16-0 and then 28-6 before going down 36-28 in an huge second half implosion. They’ll be eager to turn that around while the Dragons can feel hard done by after their loss to Cronulla.
Victory would keep the Warriors in touching distance of the top eight while a win for St George would keep them in line for the top four.
Why the Dragons will win:
While they have lost their past two, the Dragons have put up a massive fight in both and arguments can be made that they deserved to win each of them. These were a 12-point loss to the Storm two weeks ago and a four point loss to the Sharks last round.
Our Tip: Dragons by 10.
Brisbane Broncos vs Wests Tigers- Friday, 7:50pm
The Broncos were down 14-0 last week at home before they stormed back to comprehensively beat Manly 24-14. Their opponents and probable victims the Tigers come into this encounter on the back of two consecutive losses and a twenty point drubbing at the hands of the Rabbitohs.
Tigers half Mitchell Moses has been released to the Eels with the crafty Jack Littlejohn taking his place. Aaron Woods returns to the starting line-up. Meanwhile James Roberts returns for the Broncos with half Ben Hunt named in the extended squad.
Why the Broncos will win:
Suncorp Stadium for Brisbane this year has been an absolute fortress having lost only one from six. And against a struggling Tigers side this should get ugly.
Our Tip: Broncos by 20.
Gold Coast Titans vs Manly Warringah Sea Eagles- Saturday, 5:30pm
The Titans are hitting their straps winning their past three including handing the Storm their second loss of the season in last week's thrilling two-point victory. Meanwhile Manly crumbled under the pressure after eading 14-0 before going down 24-14.
Jarryd Hayne has been named for the Titans despite battling injury. He will be eager to impress NSW selectors. Meanwhile Manly's fullback Tom Trbojevic has been ruled out with the under-rated Matthew Wright named as his replacement.
Why the Titans will win:
The boys from the Glitter Strip showed the rest of the league last week that when healthy they are a team to be feared. Their win over Melbourne puts them in great stead.
Our Tip: Titans by 10
Parramatta Eels vs Canberra Raiders- Saturday, 7:30pm
Both sides under-performing. The Raiders last week suffered a humiliating loss to the Knights gifting them only their second win of the year while the Eels were smashed by the Roosters.
Moses was horrible against South Sydney last week and has no excuses coming in to this one. Bevan French returns for the Eels. Josh Papalii returns to the Raiders while Corey Norman has been ruled out through injury.
Why the Raiders will win:
While they did lose to Newcastle last week they looked the better team with the Eels resembling a reserve grade outfit against the chooks. Moses won't help.
Our Tip: Raiders by 8.
Newcastle Knights vs Penrith Panthers - Sunday, 2:00pm
Newcastle would be confident after downing the Raiders 34-20 with the Panthers scoring four tries in the final 15 minutes to record a famous victory against the Warriors. Knights star Dane Gagai boldly claimed during the week that he would be looking to make the finals with the Knights before his departure to the Rabbitohs at the end of the season.
Trent Hodkinson has been named for the Knights with Mitch Rein set to debut for the Panthers.
Why the Knights will win:
Newcastle have an opportunity to record consecutive wins for the first time since 2014. And against an out of form Penrith side, the Knights should be able to get the job done in a close one.
Our Tip: Knights by 1.
Canterbury- Bankstown Bulldogs vs Sydney Roosters- Sunday, 4:00pm
The Bulldogs were anything but impressive in last weeks degrading 16-point loss to North Queensland in Sydney while the Roosters pummelled the Eels 48-10 with NSW hopeful Blake Ferguson bagging a hat trick.
The boys from Bondi have a dominating history against the Bulldogs winning seven of their past 10. The Roosters are just one win from top spot while the Bulldogs are struggling to keep themselves inside the top eight.
Why the Roosters will win:
Their backline of Michael Gordon, Daniel Tupou, Lartell Mitchell, Joseph Manu and Blake Ferguson have amassed an impressive eighteen tries between them this year. This backline knows how to score and should continue then trend in what should be a comprehensive victory over the Bulldogs.
Our Tip: Roosters by 18.
South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Melbourne Storm- Saturday, 6:30pm
South Sydney comfortably disposed of the Tigers last week while Melbourne suffered a shock loss to the Titans. The Storm will be eager to prove that their loss was an aberration with coach Craig Bellamy sure to have given them hell this week.
Melbourne has won 22 of the past 26 encounters against South Sydney.
Why the Storm will win:
Billy Slater ris getting back to his former-self and will want to push his case for the Maroons No.1 jersey. The Storm should win easily.
Our tip: Storm by 14.
