NSW Deputy Premier John Barilaro has thrown his support behind the NRL's aim to restart its season on May 28 after COVID-19 shut the game down.
As the NRL and its teams continue to prepare itself for the competition resuming in late May, John Barilaro's comments on 2GB's The Continuous Call Team has caused more hope for optimism.
Following meetings with ARLC Chairman Peter V’landys, NRL CEO Todd Greenberg, and ARLC commissioner Wayne Pearce, Barilaro's positivity surrounding the situation eases the pressure on the NRL.
“Some of the insight that I got, I am so confident every day,” the NSW Deputy Premier said.
“(After) the green light from the broadcasters, I’m getting a little bit more confident every day that Peter V’landy may just pull this off."
Though the NRL will present an official pitch to the state government during the week, as many health concerns will need to be addressed before they are granted clearance to resume.
“But we’ll still go through the process internally, make sure people are safe”, said Barilaro.
An added boost for the code is the softened stance from Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk.
Originally unsupportive of the code's ambitions to return this season, including State of Origin being played, the Premier has changed her tone.
Yet reported plans suggest the NRL is aiming for the annual series between NSW and Queensland to be contested throughout October-November which she is more comfortable with.
“I said if we can have it at the end of the year I’d love to have it, or any time that is deemed safe by the chief health officer,” Palaszczuk told Channel 7 News.
