Tom Dumoulin beat Tour de France and Vuelta a Espana winner Chris Froome to claim the World Championship individual time trial gold in Norway.

Dutchman Dumoulin, who triumphed in the Giro d'Italia earlier this year, mastered the wet conditions in Bergen to clock 44mins 41secs for the 31km course.

That was a massive 57 seconds faster than Primoz Roglic, with Chris Froome a further 24 seconds back in third place.

"I can’t believe it, I had such a good day. I thought my power meter was off because it was so high," Dumoulin said after completing a Worlds double, having won the team time trial with Sunweb earlier in the week.

Froome was coming off the back of a gruelling few months that saw him claim a historic Grand Tour double - and he was far from disappointed with his result.

"A massive congratulations to Tom. I’m just glad I’ve got no regrets," the British rider said.

"I gave it everything I had and I’d much rather be here and get a bronze then be at home wondering 'what if?'. The question has been answered and now it’s time to put my feet up.”

Australia's Rohan Dennis finished eighth, but was on track for a medal until a nasty crash in the tricky conditions.

The 27-year-old was just 10 seconds off Dumoulin's pace at the third of four checkpoints, but then went down heavily and saw his hopes cruelly ended.
