Tennis star goes public after elderly man dies following a motor accident involving her vehicle
Venus Williams has finally spoken about a fatal car crash she was involved in that killed a 78-year-old man.
The tennis star was driving her car in Palm Beach Gardens on June 9 when her SUV was in collision with another vehicle – with that car’s passenger Jerome Barson suffering a head trauma and then dying two weeks later.
Media reports claim a police report states: “(Venus) is at fault for violating the right of way of (the other driver).”
But Williams has now issued a statement through her lawyer claiming that Barson’s vehicle – which was being driven by his wife – crashed into her.
“Ms. Williams entered the intersection on a green light,” lawyer Malcolm Cunningham said.
“The police report estimates that Ms Williams was travelling at 5mph (8km/h) when Mr Barson crashed into her. Authorities did not issue Ms Williams with any citations or traffic violations.”
Cunningham added: “This is an unfortunate accident and Venus expresses her deepest condolences to the family who lost a loved one.”
Williams is currently preparing for Wimbledon – a tournament she has won five times.
