Verdasco said no matter what he tried against the world No.1, nothing worked as he lost 6-1 7-6 6-2 on Tuesday night.

He also felt he was unlucky to draw Djokovic in the first round, conceding it was almost “impossible” to progress past him.

He was also unhappy with the surface of Rod Laver Arena after his forehand let him down.

“I prefer not to talk about this (bad forehand) because I’ll talk so bad about someone,” Verdasco said after his loss to Djokovic.

“It’s just unbelievable that one court, Rod Laver, the ball can bounce so different from different points of the court. How it can come so slow and then all of a sudden it slides on the court like it was indoor carpet in the 1980s.

“It was pretty disappointing for me, I saw the courts were already like this for the last week. When I practiced with Andy (Murray), I told him ‘it’s much faster for me than other years’.

“With a player like Novak, he plays so flat and the ball just slides on the court, no matter how softly he hits the ball, it’s just so complicated to try and dictate, because he just hits a normal backhand it’s almost impossible to hit a good shot.

“I thought many times the ball was coming slow so I could have time to hit my forehand and all of a sudden I was hitting with the frame and outside into the fence. Like this, 15 times… and it never happens to me almost in my career, it’s unbelievable.”

Djokovic had a light-hearted view on his opponents thoughts of Rod Laver Arena.

“The 80s carpet I'm not familiar with, indoor,” Djokovic joked.

“I mean, I respect his views and opinion. Of course, everybody I guess experiences differently, the match and the conditions.

“I didn't find it too bad. Last probably three, four years the court, centre court and also the outside courts, have played quicker than the years before that. That's what I feel.

“But in terms of even and uneven bounces, I didn't see any significant difference.”

Djokovic was relieved to progress and praised Verdasco's prowess.

“I'm very pleased with the first round, considering I had one of the toughest first-round draws,” he said.

“Definitely considering his form, how well he played in Doha. Just overall I'm feeling good about my performance.”
