Dismantle receives $15,000 cash and $15,000 in flight vouchers to keep helping youngsters in Western Australia
A cycling project in Western Australia that helps young people at risk is celebrating after landing a $30,000 grant from Jetstar.
The BikeRescue Program, run by not-for-profit organisation Dismantle, will now be able to go into regional and remote WA communities.
The program is designed to engage with youngsters through the positive influence of bike culture and mentorship. It uses hands-on activities, such as the restoration of bikes, to boost the self-esteem of those involved. The BikeRescue project also builds tangible skills and helps promote a positive future for at-risk youth.
Dismantle CEO Pat Ryan says the organisation’s mission to create an inclusive and supportive bike community has changed the lives of thousands of children who’ve been referred to the program.
“As part of our program, youth learn to strip back old bikes, clean off rust, and replace parts. They build two bikes; the first is donated to a local charity which enables them to earn the second bike for themselves.
“In doing so, we provide a unique opportunity for participants to connect with peers, mentors, their local community and their future.
“The Jetstar Flying Start grant will allow us to press fast-forward on our regional WA strategy. The $15,000 in cash means we will be able to increase our licensed partners in remote areas, training them to deliver our BikeRescue program independently.
“The $15,000 in flights will give our staff the chance to connect with similar organisations in Australia to trade insights on best practice.”
Jetstar Australia and New Zealand Chief Executive Officer, Dean Salter, was on the judging panel, which awarded the grant.
“The judges were impressed with the success of the unique model of the BikeRescue IP and their vision to expand throughout the Western Australian community.” said Mr Salter.
The Jetstar Flying Start program invites community groups and organisations across Australia to apply for a $30,000 grant to fund a project that will enrich the lives of people in their local community. Dismantle is the 16th recipient of a Jetstar Flying Start grant.
