Hamilton strikes as Vettel stumbles in Germany
Two weeks after Sebastian Vettel spoiled Lewis Hamilton's home grand prix party by winning at Silverstone, Lewis Hamilton returned the favour at the Ferrari driver's home race in Germany. Starting a lowly 14th after dramas in qualifying, Hamilton's charge to the front was assisted by the appearance of the Safety Car and also Vettel himself, who crashed out while holding a comfortable lead.

Dixon triumphs in Toronto Indy
New Zealand driver Scott Dixon extended his Verizon IndyCar Series championship points lead with victory in the Honda Indy Toronto street circuit race. Pole winner and reigning series champion Josef Newgarden led early until he brushed a wall. The win Dixon’s 44th in Indycar, moving the 37 year-old Kiwi to within eight wins of equalling Mario Andretti for second on the all-time list. AJ Foyt tops the chart with 67 wins.

Verstappen wins in Austria
It was a day of uncharacteristically heavy tyre wear and an equally unexpectedly high rate of mechanical attrition that saw both Mercedes as well as Daniel Ricciardo's Red Bull bow out with technical failures. But Ricciardo's team-mate, Max Verstappen, was untroubled on either of those fronts, the Dutchman surging to a victory that had seemed highly unlikely 24 hours earlier after a disappointing qualifying performance from the Red Bull team.

Fernando Alonso has won the Le Mans 24 Hour on debut in the sports car classic with Toyota. The dual world drivers’ champion shared the honours with co-drivers Kazuki Nakajima and Sebastien Buemi, and led home a Toyota one-two. In the GTE-Am class, Australian Matt Campbell was victorious with co-drivers Julien Andlauer and Christian Ried in a Porsche fielded by the Dempsey-Proton team owned by actor Patrick Dempsey.
