Getting the bike bag around

With four sets of paired wheels, the Scicon AeroComfort Road 3.0 TSA Bike Travel Bag is a cinch to move around. Unlike most bags - where you need to lift one end and wheel it - there is very little load to moving this bag. There’s a haul handle on top, and a longer shoulder strap should you need to take it up a flight of stairs. These are both removable and fit in an outer pocket for when you check your bag in. There are still outer handles to make it easy to move the bike around – such as on and off conveyer belts.

Once you pass your bike through security screening, who knows what truly happens to it? I have heard such bags get placed upside down so they don’t roll away, and that having the handlebars attached leaves the shifters exposed if the bag gets dropped. There is plenty of internal padding inside for protection from that, but it is fair concern. There is only so much you can do to prevent damage from malicious handling.

However, on a couple of domestic flights with this bag and one international trip – there were no problems. The bag is easy to move through airports, and the fairly compact size makes it much more simple to get into the back of a car as well. But given the bag is as wide as your handlebars, you might still need a van or station wagon.

Re-building your bike

This is actually a little quicker than packing it. Zip open the bag, pop the straps off the bars, top tube and saddle, and take your wheels out. Undo the quick releases, remove the derailleur protector, and put your wheels in. If you had to drop your seat, put it back to the right height, and check tyre pressure. You should now be set to fill your bottles and head out for a ride – and I suspect that would be less than 10 minutes in total even if you’re not mechanically minded.

Put all this together and the result is obvious – it is one of the easiest ways to transport your bike. The bag packs down and has its own tote bag for storage at home, and is therefore a lot easier to handle than a hardcase - while offering similar protection. Travel is tiring as it is, so with a bag that’s easy to pack, transport and unpack, you’re making an investment not just in the protection of your bike – but the enjoyment of your holiday.

Pros:

- So easy to pack

- Ease of transport

- Lighter than previous versions

Cons:

- A larger investment than some bags
