Wayne Bennett says the Broncos are not chasing Mitchell Pearce after questioning the influence he would have on the club.
Pearce is being courted by Manly, Cronulla and Newcastle after being released from the Roosters following the signing of Cooper Cronk.
There was speculation Pearce could head north, however, Bennett quashed those rumours in emphatic fashion, having a cheeky dig in the process, likely in relation to the halfback's infamous Australia Day controversy when he was videod simulating a sex act with a small dog.
He was susequently fined $125,000 and suspended for eight matches.
“Mitchell Pearce will not be at the Broncos,” Bennett was quoted.
“We can’t afford him under the salary cap but even if we could afford him, we still wouldn’t take him. Pearce is a good player but we’re happy with the culture we’ve got here.
“People criticise me for signing James Roberts (former NRL bad boy) but James is not a leader at this club.
“People don’t follow James at this club, he fits into the Broncos culture.
“I’m happy with the squad I’ve got.”
Manly are in the box seat to lure Pearce north of the bridge after releasing half Blake Green to the Warriors on the same day the NSW No.7 left Bondi.
“Obviously Manly have shown interest and there’s been a couple of other clubs,” Pearce said.
“I’m going to keep my options open and see what’s out there and what fits best for me.”
